Philosophy for Athletes offers a reflective space for athletes and coaches who wish to think more deeply about their work, their choices, and the meaning of sport in their lives. Through philosophical counseling and workshops, it brings perspective to the challenges, questions, and values that shape life within and beyond high-performance sport.

Elite sport is arguably one of the most competitive environments in modern life, demanding a lifestyle of constant acceleration and focus towards “faster, higher, stronger”, often leaving little time or space for critical reflection. Yet every athlete will, at some point, encounter moments of confrontation, doubt, and inner questioning. Philosophy for Athletes helps athlete to slow down, find grounding, and allow vulnerablity to regain perspective and move forward with greater clarity.

Philosophy for Athletes

Hey! My name is Wouter...

I am a certified philosophical counselor based in Oslo, Norway. In my work, I draw on advanced training in continental philosophy alongside extensive experience within sporting contexts. My approach does not begin with the aim of fixing or optimizing individuals back into a performance system, nor do I chase symptoms or offer performance hacks. Instead, I aim to create a collaborative philosophical inquiry into what you are living through, exploring underlying values and dynamics to gain clarity.

I hold university degrees in both sport science and philosophy, and I am currently a PhD candidate at the Norwegian University of Sport Science. My doctoral research focuses on the existential pressures elite athletes encounter throughout their careers.

My services

Individual counseling

My aim as a philosophical counselor is to offer athletes a reflective space in which to think through compelling questions, difficult decisions, and dilemmas that arise within both sporting and personal contexts. Drawing on diverse philosophical perspectives, we work collaboratively to cultivate ethical clarity, a deeper sense of personal freedom, and renewed vitality.

In the past, I have supported athletes in navigating difficult choices, transitions and identity shifts, search for meaning, anxiety, burnout, and related existential challenges.

I work best with people who value a critical eye and are comfortable exploring uncertainty. If you’re seeking definite answers, fixed methods, or guaranteed results, this may not be the right fit.

I also offer Workshops for teams, clubs, federations, institutes, and other sport organizations to create collective reflection and dialogue. Designed for professional and high-performance sport contexts, these workshops aim to raise awareness of key philosophical questions that shape contemporary sports culture, including the value and meaning of sport, existential risks in elite athletics, and the ethical, social, and political implications of professionalization and competition. Through guided discussion and conceptual tools drawn from philosophy, participants are encouraged to critically examine shared assumptions, roles, and responsibilities within their sporting environment.
